Boldon Outdoor Nursery

The Jarrow MP paid a visit to Boldon Nursery School, in Reginald Street, Boldon Colliery, which is funded through the local authority, and was highly impressed by the facilities it has to offer local children.  The facility is the only outdoor Nursery of its type in the North East.  Currently, there are 94 children aged between three and four years enrolled with the Nursery.
Modern facilities at the Nursery include a miniature Souter Lighthouse and custom-made beach to greet the pupils as they step outside the more traditional classroom.  Furthermore, the nursery also has a fire pit, willow tunnel, mud kitchen, potting shed, allotment, chicken coop and a cosy cabin.  Additionally, some of the garden has been allowed to grow wild, with mud banks to jump off, trees to climb and bushes to weave in and out of.
The outdoor provision has been praised by Ofsted, which judged the nursery to be outstanding when it last visited in November 2011.
During the visit Stephen met with Sue Stokoe, Head Teacher of Boldon Nursery, Bryan Chapman, Chair of Governors and Governor Dave Townsley, along with staff and children at the Nursery.
Stephen Hepburn MP said:
“I was delighted to visit Boldon Nursery School, a wonderful local learning facility for young children.
“Boldon Outdoor Nursery School is the North East’s First Outdoor Nursery where the children spend up to the majority of their time there in all weathers, throughout the year.

“I had a wonderful day and I can’t thank Sue, her staff and the children enough for making me so welcome.”
