Organ Donation

Stephen Hepburn, MP for the Jarrow Constituency, has put his support behind the campaign to change the law on organ donation in England.

In England, organ donation and transplantation are only used with given consent. People can choose to sign up to the register if they want to allow their organs to be donated.

According to the Department of Health and Social Care, there are over 6,500 people across the country currently waiting on transplant waiting lists as there is a serious shortage of suitable organs.

The Department has also said on record that up to three people die each day while waiting for an organ to become available.

The Bill was debated in Parliament on Friday 23rd February, and would enable people in England to withhold consent for organ donation and transplantation and move to a system of deemed consent.

Campaigners are also calling on the Department of Health in England to introduce the 'deemed consent', or an 'opt-out' system as well. Wales already has an opt-out system and the Scottish Government are also planning to bring forward proposals.

At the 2017 Labour Party Conference, Jeremy Corbyn MP stated that a future Labour Government would bring a Bill to Parliament for an opt-out system of organ donation in England.

Stephen Hepburn MP said:

“I’m pleased to support this Bill alongside campaigners and other MPs who are pressing the Government to move to an opt-out system of organ donation in England. This will save lives up and down the country.”

“It is truly shocking that up to three people die each day while waiting for an organ to become available and that over 6,500 people are on the organ waiting list.”

“If this goes ahead, people should be able to opt out as easily as possible if they do not wish to donate their organs at all or certain organs after death. Organ donation is a gift and people’s wishes should be respected if they want to opt out.”

“The Government must also work with community groups to ensure that cultural and religious views are taken into account before any change is introduced.”

“I would like to encourage my constituents to help those in need by signing up to the NHS Organ Donor Register”
