Benefit sanctions EDM

The Tory-led Government introduced a new harsher sanctions regime for benefits in October 2012, including an increase in the length of time which JSA could be stripped from an individual to up to three years.

The Motion reveals that there is a “large amount of compelling evidence from the PCS union, charities, welfare advisers, and academics showing that the current sanctions regime is excessive, punitive and falling.”

The Jarrow MP, who has already raised this matter in Parliament, said:

“It is disgraceful that this Government’s welfare changes are leaving people with no money for weeks and months on end.

“It is cruel and callous and this is not right.  It needs to replaced by a system fit for a civilised society in the 21st century!”
