Unemployment statistics

Stephen Hepburn, MP for the Jarrow Constituency, has today slammed the Government over local employment figures.

According to official figures from the House of Commons Library, the total number of unemployed claimants in the Jarrow constituency in December 2018 was 2,185.

The number of claimants in the Jarrow constituency is 445 higher than December 2017.  Furthermore, there were 435 claimants aged 18-24 in December 2018, 90 higher than December 2017.

Stephen Hepburn MP said:

“It is always shocking how the Tory Government boast about how good the employment percentages are. The truth is that unemployment has increased in the Jarrow Constituency and the official figures prove it.

“There are 2,185 real people who are claiming unemployment benefit in the Jarrow constituency. They just want a job. They don’t want to hear from Tory Government Ministers boasting and bragging. It is important to remember that.

Universal Credit must be radically reformed and replaced with something better because it doesn't help create the fairer, decent economy for all that Labour's pledged to build.”
