Gazette Column - 14/5/15

Labour did brilliantly too in the local elections for South Tyneside Council and the brilliant councillors you picked will serve the area well.

So it was a bitter blow the Conservatives won nationally and David Cameron is back in Downing Street from where he wasted no time intensifying his war on working people.

We had a guarantee the Jarrow NHS Walk-In Centre would remain open by a Labour Government and therefore we must urgently examine new ways of intensifying the campaign now the Tories are once again running the National Health Service into the ground.

Labour's conducting an inquest into the campaign and we'll elect a new leader now Ed Miliband's stepped down so I'd like to hear from you, about where you think nationally we got it right and wrong, and who you'd prefer to lead the party.

We've bounced back before and I have an unshakeable confidence that Labour will do so again but we shouldn't underestimate the Tory horrors that'll be unleashed over the next few years.

We'll have to battle harder than ever to save an NHS we love and £12 billion of social security cuts planned by the Tories will hit hardest those people in work on low wages who rely on tax credits and benefits to top up pay packets.

Then there is the referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union could threaten investment in the region at places such as Nissan, jeopardising jobs and exports.

The Tories hate opposition and I'll combat plots to shackle trade unions and stuff the House of Lords with more unelected Conservative cronies.

I'm up for the fight.
