Unemployment statistics

Stephen Hepburn MP for the Jarrow Constituency has today criticised the Tory government following the release of their local unemployment figures.

According to official figures published from the House of Commons Library, the total number of unemployed claimants in the Jarrow constituency in February 2019 was 2,425 – a 19 per cent increase over the past 12 months.

The number of claimants in Jarrow constituency is 460 higher than in February 2018 and 90 higher than February 2019.  There were 460 claimants aged 18-24 in March 2019, 85 higher than March 2018.

Stephen Hepburn MP said:

“The Tories continue to boast about how good they are at getting people into employment but the truth is that unemployment has increased in the Jarrow Constituency.

“There are 2,425 real people who are claiming unemployment benefit in the Jarrow constituency. They don’t want to hear from Tory Government Ministers boasting and bragging.

“The government’s Universal Credit is a complete failure and not fit for purpose because so many people are left worse off, it must be radically reformed.  We need a fairer, decent economy for all that Labour's pledged to build.”
