School funding

Stephen Hepburn MP for the Jarrow Constituency is supporting a Motion in Parliament which calls for more funding for our schools.

The Jarrow Constituency MP, who slammed the Tory Government’s schools funding policy during Education Questions in Parliament back in April, believes that unless the Government allocates additional money, schools will continue to suffer.

School funding has already been cut by £2.8 billion since 2015 and Head Teachers and staff are now faced with the difficult job of having to make ends meet so they can offer the best education for all children.

Schools North East data indicates that, compared to 2015/16, the 19/20 financial year will see on average a £30,904 reduction in funding per primary school and a £189,776 reduction in funding per secondary school in the North East area.

The Early Day Motion states:

“That this House recognises the inadequacy of the funding currently available to all state schools; expresses deep concern over the warning from more than 7,000 head teachers that budget shortages are worsening; commends the call by head teachers for greater funding through the Worth Less? campaign; acknowledges that teachers and parents have to provide and fund basic resources due to a lack of funding from central government; and calls on the Government to restore the per-pupil schools budget to 2015/16 levels in real terms, giving schools £2.5 billion in extra funding. Stephen Hepburn MP added:

“This government have cut budgets so that Head Teachers are struggling to make ends meet. Austerity in our schools must end, and the next Labour government will reverse these cuts, giving our schools the resources they need and increasing per pupil funding to a record high.”
