Unemployment statistics

Stephen Hepburn MP for the Jarrow Constituency has today criticised the Tory government following the latest release of local unemployment figures.

According to official figures published from the House of Commons Library, the total number of unemployed claimants in the Jarrow constituency in August 2019 was 2,380 – a 23 per cent increase over the past 12 months.

The number of claimants in the Jarrow constituency is 450 higher than in July 2018.  There were 475 claimants aged 18-24 in August 2019, 125 higher than August 2018 – a 35 per cent increase.

Stephen Hepburn MP said:

“For many years the Tories have completely failed this area and these latest unemployment figures tell you everything you need to know about this government.

“The government’s
Universal Credit is not fit for purpose because so many people are left worse off. It needs an urgent, radical overhaul and this is why we need a Labour government under Jeremy Corbyn who will ensure that areas such as the North East are not left to struggle on.”
