Retirement celebrations for Joyce Phipps

The Jarrow MP was delighted to attend a special retirement event at The Sight Service in Gordon Street, South Shields recently to honour Mrs Joyce Phipps for over 50 years of service to visually impaired people.

Phipps, from Jarrow, is retiring after many years’ service as Chairman of Gateshead and South Tyneside Sight Service. The celebration also honoured her contribution in her roles as Chairman of South Tyneside Blind Welfare Committee, Chairman of the North Regional Association for the Blind, Trustee of the Royal National Institute for the Blind, Chairman and Founder of the Hebburn and Jarrow Blind Club, together with the key role she played while serving as a local councillor and Mayor of South Tyneside.

Stephen Hepburn MP said:

“I was delighted to attend the retirement celebrations of Joyce and to pay tribute to over 30 years of service from her to the local community.

“This is a truly outstanding achievement and Joyce is a real ‘unsung hero’ of our society.  I would like to wish Joyce a very long and happy retirement.”
